I am tired of family's being asked how they are SURVIVING with their newborn.
Why as a culture are we willing to settle for surviving what is an important and memorable part of our lives?
Questions that are constantly asked are:
How are your surviving with a newborn in the house?
Are you running on caffeine now?
How are you getting by with no sleep?
All these questions lead to the assumption that the postpartum time period is just meant to be gotten through and not enjoyed and cherished. You will never be able to get this time back with your newborn why not soak in every moment of it and enjoy it to the fullest. Why can't you be at your best during this time? We know you can when you are supported.
Part of the problem is the way most of America views this period in a family's life. This quote sums it up nicely:
“In western society, the baby gets attention while the mother is given lectures. Pregnancy is considered an illness; once the ‘illness’ is over, interest in her wanes. Mothers in ‘civilized’ countries often have no or very little help with a new baby. Women tend to be home alone to fend for themselves and the children. They are typically isolated socially & expected to complete their usual chores…while being the sole person to care for the infant…” –Milk, Money, & Madness
Many "traditional" cultures still honor the postpartum period. During this time the mother is still pampered and taken care of.
